Description: The macrothallus of this genus is uniseriate in the lower part but longitudinal divisions occur further up. These divisions occur in a rather regular pattern which clearly separates this genus from Isthmoplea. The divisions are asynchronous; one longitudinal wall is followed by a wall in each of the resulting cells, and the two outermost of the 4 cells formed function as initials for laterals (Jaasund 1960). The laterals are mostly short, up to 0.5 mm, and the growth is diffuse intercalary. Except the uniseriate basal part, major parts of the macrothallus may be transformed into plurilocular sporangia. Both life history and unilocular sporangia are unknown. True phaeophycean hairs are absent.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
