Description: Plants reach 30 cm in length and are erect from a crustose holdfast, the fronds being flat, irregularly furcate, gelatinous to firm in texture and relatively thick. Each cell of the axial filament bears two periaxial derivatives, although central filaments are obscured by the considerable development of medullary filaments and rhizoids. The cortex is pseudoparenchymatous, the surface layers forming only weakly defined rosettes. Gonimoblast development is typical of the family. Cystocarps have several small cells or, at times, one more or less conspicuous cell, at the center, the central sterile mass surrounded by elongate gonimoblast filaments bearing chains or clusters of carposporangia interspersed with a few sterile filaments running to the pericarp. Although generally similar to Rhodophyllis, it is maintained by Min-Thein and Womersley (1976) because of its abrupt medulla to cortex transition and the composition of the carposporophyte, in which either a central cluster of sterile cells or an enlarged cell not the result of fusions may be present. The development of small groups, rather than strict chains, of carposporangia, is also distinctive.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
