Nomenclatural note
Index Nominum Algarum notes that the type of Goniotrichum is "G. ceramicola sensu Kützing". The material upon which the generic description was based was originally referred to Conferva ceramicola H. C. Lyngbye, a species now considered not to be congeneric with the original material. The original material has been referred to G. alsidii (G. Zanardini) M. A. Howe (B. alsidii G. Zanardini) (vide R. Ross, Taxon 14: 96. 1965)." See also Wynne (1985) and Schneider & Wynne (2007).
