Nomenclatural note
According to ING, "The material upon which the generic description was based, later named A. magnusii, was originally referred with much doubt to Myrionema orbiculare J. G. Agardh, a species now considered to be congeneric but not conspecific with A. magnusii." A. Athanasiadis (e-mail, 11 November 2018) writes: "Since the Sydney Code (Voss &al. 1981, Art. 10.2-3), the type of a genus is the (type of the cited) name of a species, and not the material used to prepare the generic account. Hence the type of Ascocyclus Magnus is A. orbicularis (= Myrionema orbiculare J.Ag.), the only species name cited by Magnus. Suavageau's (1927) proposal [A. magnusii C. Sauvageau (Bull. Stat. Biol. Arachon 24: 14 adnot. 1927)] requires conservation."

Taxonomic note
"taxonomic treatment of the genus would require a broader taxon sampling.
55. The type species, Ascocyclus magnusii Sauvageau (1927), is presently considered as a Myrionema species, and most of the species were transferred in Myrionema or Chilioniema genera, but 3 are still in need of reinvestigation: A. dichotomus Ohta (1973), A. hypneae Børgesen (1920), A. stenonemus Takamatsu in Noda (1987)." (Silberfeld, Rousseau & Reviers 2014: 132, footnote). - (20 June 2014) - M.D. Guiry
