Description: Spherical cells united in gelatinous matrix, each with massive, parietal, reddish chloroplast without pyrenoid. Cell diam. 9-20 (45) µm. Reproduction by cell division. Sexual reproduction unknown. Mitosis examined ultrastructurally. Nucleus-associated organelle a polar ring. At prometaphase, 1 or 2 microtubule-containing cytoplasmic invaginations penetrate nucleus at each pole. At metaphase, intranuclear spindle associated with chromosomal plate; nuclear envelope intact except polar gaps. Elongated anaphase interzonal midpiece; breaks down at telophase. Chloroplast constricted by cleavage furrow. Pigments include phycoerythrin, R-phycocyanin, chlorophyll a, zeaxanthin, ß-carotene. Floridean starch grains up to 3.5 µm, an alpha1,4-linked glucopyranoside with 1,6 branches.
