Description: Cells large, weakly siliceous and usually solitary. Valves somewhat broadly lanceolate in outline. Raphe rather prominent, eccentric, slightly depressed in the middle of the valve. Cingulum simple. Chuniella has been collected in planktonic samples from the Indian and Antarctic Oceans. Hendey (1937) indicates this rarely reported and ill-defined genus is intermediate between Navicula and Nitzschia.
