Description: Spherical unicells, rarely united in a common mucilaginous matrix, 1.5-6 µm diam. and containing a blue-green, parietal, plate-like chloroplast without a pyrenoid. Reproduction by 4 endospores (2-3 µm). Sexual reproduction not reported.

Chloroplast contains single, parallel, concentric thylakoids with phycobilisomes like other algae with predominant phycocyanin. One mitochondrion. Older cells with large vacuole but not log-phase cells. Cells grown in high CO₂ form prominent starch grains.

Comments: Cosmopolitan in acid thermal areas. Temperature range in situ 13-57_C; optimum for growth 45_C. pH range in situ 0.05-5.0; optimum 2-3. Lower amounts of unsaturated fatty acids at higher temperatures. Osmoacclimation by floridoside and iso-floridoside, supporting red algal affinity. High-efficiency NO₃^- uptake system with possible proton cotransport. Grows on glucose in dark with reduction in pigments. Included in Cyanidiophyceae by Merola and others (1982) because chloroplast envelope appears to be a single membrane.
