Description: Thallus epiphytic, forming tufts to 20 mm high on surface of host. Basal layer adpressed to host. Erect branched filaments issuing from the basal layer, consisting of unpigmented proximal portion of more or less inflated cells forming the medulla and pigmented distal part of barrel-shaped cells with intercalary meristem (= assimilatory filament) forming the cortex of the thallus. Longer, straight and shorter, often curved assimilatory filaments may both occur in same thallus. Reproductive organs simple uniseriate plurilocular and/or obovate unilocular sporangia, produced within the cortex from outermost medulla cells or inserted laterally on stalk cells at the base, in some cases also in distal parts, of assimilatory filaments. Phaeophycean hairs absent. Life history direct without ploidy change from zoids from plurilocular sporangia, or direct with meiosis in unilocular sporangia and somatic diploidization in basal cells of erect filaments. Haploid chromosome number about 10.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
