Description: The slightly irregular bipinnate branching pattern is characteristic for the genus. Single or adjacent cells in the uniseriate macrothallus are divided longitudinally at irregular intervals. Each of the 2 cells formed by this process develops into a lateral; when this occurs from adjacent cells there is a basipetal length decrease of the laterals, i.e. the uppermost pair in such a series is the oldest. In well-developed plants, first order laterals may undergo a similar branching pattern. Plurilocular sporangia are formed by transformation of short laterals on main axis and laterals. Sporangia opposite or opposite a vegetative branch. Unilocular sporangia formed by transformation of unicellular laterals. The subdivisions in the parental cell take place after it is closed by a wall. Unilocular sporangia also occur terminally on a short stalk. Life history unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
