Description: Plants form low cushions to 1.5 cm in height on intertidal rocks, the prostrate cylindrical portions being fixed to the substratum by hapteral discs and bearing numerous erect cylindrical branches. Axial filaments produce 2 periaxial cells, oriented at 90 deg. to one another. Carpogonial branches are 3-celled, and auxiliary cells only differentiate after fertilization, being borne on the same or an adjacent branch system to the carpogonium. The main feature distinguishing this genus from Caulacanthus, from which Joly and Alveal transfer the sole species, is the unilateral position of the cystocarp, caused by failure of the fusion cell to incorporate the central axial filament of the fertile branchlet, in contrast to the central and terminal position of the cystocarp in Caulacanthus. Min-Thein and Womersley (1976) question the valildity of this feature and its importance as a sole generic character.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
