Spiraulax Kofoid, 1911

Description: Unicellular biflagellate, heterodynamic large (120-150 µm long) cells with cell wall composed of cellulosic plates with well visible pores. Plate formula:Po, 4', 1a, 6", 6c, 6s, 6"', 1p, 1"" (after Sournia 1986), for further discussion see Balech 1988, Carbonell-Moore 1996b). Cells circular in apical and antapical view but biconical in ventral view. The cingulum is median, slightly displaced. The sulcus extends only slightly into the episome but is deeply impressed on the hyposome, nearly reaching the antapex. Thecal apical plates very often split giving the characteristic view of the species. Chloroplasts present, cyst formation and sexual reproduction so far not reported. Habitat:Marine plankton of oceanic warm waters, in all major oceans.
