Description: Thallus erect or partially decumbent, stipitate or not, attached by a single holdfast or with several secondary attachments, richly and irregularly branched, often cervicorn; branches terete or flattened, overgrown by a layer of sponge (Prosuberites sp.). Structure multiaxial, with a densely filamentous or pseudoparenchymatous medulla of large hyaline cells, grading to a pseudoparenchymatous cortex; secondary pit connections common between cells. Surface with numerous short pseudoparenchymatous protuberances and many simple moniliform filaments arising from the epidermis. Reproductive structures borne in specialised leaflets arising laterally and clear of the sponge, these firm, smooth and cartilaginous. Reproductive leaflets with a medulla of stellate cells, these with a spherical core and radiating arms, grading to a filamentous subdichotomously divided cortex; in cystocarpic leaflets often with files of cells; in tetrasporangial leaflets with paired ellipsoidal cells. Ampullae branched to 2 or 3 orders. Carpogonial branch 2-celled, on the primary ampullar filament. Hypogynous cell bearing a short lateral filament. Auxiliary cell in a separate ampulla, the lowermost cell of a secondary ampullar filament or an intercalary cell of the primary filament. A single outwardly directed gonimoblast initial producing a compact cystocarp of many small carposporangia. Small auxiliary fusion cell formed. Pericarp of ampullar and adjacent cortical cells. Ostiole indistinct. Spermatangia superficial, cut off by oblique walls. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia small, cruciately divided, immersed in the cortex.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
