Acronema Teal, T.Guillemette, M.Chapman & Margulis, 1998, nom. illeg.

Holotype species: Acronema sippewissettense Teal, T.Guillemette, M.Chapman & Margulis

Currently accepted name for the type species: Cafeteria sippewissettensis (Teal, T.Guillemette, M.Chapman & Margulis) Cavalier-Smith

Original publication and holotype designation: Teal, T.H., Guillemette, T., Chapman, M. & Margulis, L. (1998). Acronema sippewissetensis gen. nov. sp. nov., microbial mat bicosoecid (Bicosoecales = Bicosoecida). European Journal of Protistology 34: 402-414.

Description: Cells colorless, naked; young cells more or less spherical, older cells reniform to oblong and slightly dorsoventrally flattened. Two unequal, tapered (acronematic) flagella emerging at about a right angle to each other from a mid-ventral depression in young cells or from a subapical ventral depression in older cells. Anterior flagellum with a bilateral array of bipartite tubular flagellar hairs, beating in a sinusoidal fashion. Posterior flagellum naked, more acronematic than anterior flagellum, either held rigid and straight during swimming, or bent to redirect the cell in a new direction. Cells able to perch on posterior flagellum. Anterior dorsal edge of cell with a slight peristome below which a ventral groove originates which extends on right-hand side of the cell to a mid-ventral level and in which the proximal part of the posterior flagellum is located. Cells feed on bacteria. Before the cells divide, they become large and rounded, with four flagella originating together on cell surface; division proceeds as flailing pairs of flagella migrate to opposite sides of the cell, which then constricts at its midpoint and eventually braks into 2 offspring cells; cells can also form spherical propagules (resting stages) that lack walls and flagella. Known from marine intertidal microbial mat communities in USA. For classification of Acronema and other bicosoecid flagellates see Bicosoeca.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
