Description: Thallus erect to several cm, alternately branched, densely corticated with rhizoids.Procarp, carposporophyte and spermatangia unrecorded. Polysporangia on upper part of thallus.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pleonosporium.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Saunders, G.W. (2024). Australasian Lophothamnion J.Agardh aligns genetically with Pleonosporium Nägeli (Wrangeliaceae, Spongoclonieae): new species from the western Atlantic. Cryptogamie, Algologie 45(1): [1-10).

Comments: Poorly known genus from southern Australia.
