Description: Epilithic, smooth brown crusts to 10 cm or more in diameter and 1 mm thick. Pseudoparenchymatous, made up of 1 or a few layers of closely-packed horizontal filaments (cells 15-25 m long ( 5-12 m in diameter) curving upwards to give rise to an upper region of vertical filaments (6-12 m long ( 4-7 m in diameter). Cell with several parietal, discoid chloroplasts. Phaeophycean hairs few, in bundles. Lower surface of crust with numerous short multicellular rhizoids. Sorus formed from erect filaments, consisting of loosely- arranged unbranched filaments (ca. 250 m and 12-20 cells long), tapering distally. One or more intercalary cells produce fusiform to needle-shaped unilocular sporangia (20-35 m long ( 4-6 m in diameter), up to 10 from a single lateral process. 1-2 (3) sets of sporangia per soral process each producing ca. 16 spores. Plurilocular sporangia not reported. Single species, Z. leiomorpha, endemic to southwestern Africa marine province on the west coast of South Africa, growing from the sublittoral fringe to at least 8 m depth.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
