Sinosiphonia C.K.Tseng & B.L.Zheng, 1983

Holotype species: Sinosiphonia elegans C.K.Tseng & B.L.Zheng

Original publication and holotype designation: Tseng, C.K. & Zheng, B.L. (1983). Sinosiphonia, a new red algal genus of the Rhodomelaceae from North China. Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology 1: 352-360.

Description: Polysiphonous thalli erect, up to 40 cm tall, from a disc-shaped holdfast; monopodial branching, 6 pericentral cells with light cortication. Branches cylindrical, arranged in a 1/6 spiral on the axis and are progressively smaller distally. Trichoblasts with chromatophores, persistent, terminating most branchlets. Polysiphonous branches potentially indeterminate and either one of these branches or a trichoblast produced from every segment; proximal segments mostly denuded of trichoblasts. Tetrasporangia developed in straight series in distal parts of unmodified main branches or their branches, 4 sporangia per segment and cortication occurring in the swollen mature fertile branch. Gametophyte plants somewhat smaller and less branched than sporophytes. Procarp comprised of 2 sterile groups and a 4-celled carpogonial branch attached to the supporting cell; fertile branches developing 3-5 cystocarps, spheroid to urceolate and with outer layers of small cortical cells; gonimoblast seemingly monopodial. Male fertile regions occupying proximal parts of branching trichoblasts, the fertile mass of cells sometimes extending over branching parts of the trichoblast. Usually sterile monosiphonous parts of trichoblasts extend distally.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
