Thamnophyllis R.E.Norris, 1964

Holotype species: Thamnophyllis pocockiae R.E.Norris

Original publication and holotype designation: Norris, R.E. (1964). The morphology and taxonomy of South African Kallymeniaceae. Botanica Marina 7: 90-129, 50 figs, 1 table, 10 plates.

Description: Flabellately to palmately branched to several orders; margins often with proliferations. Membranous or coriaceous. Stipe short or absent. Holdfast small, discoid. Medulla of isodiametric to irregularly elliptical cells, some becoming stellate. Cortex of isodiametric cells, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Chains of small cells developing from inner cortex and growing into medulla. A central layer of periclinal filaments evident in older parts of thallus. Dioecious, where known. Up to twelve 3-celled carpogonial branches borne on supporting cell. First cells of carpogonial branches usually elongate and sometimes lobed. After fertilization, fusion cell formed by supporting cell and first cells of carpogonial branches, producing nonseptate connecting filaments that contact separate auxiliary cells, which bear up to ten subsidiary cells. Gonimoblast developing from the connecting filament in contact with auxiliary cell. Cystocarps immersed but causing localized swelling of thallus. Clumps of carposporangia separated by filaments of both medullary and gonimoblast origin. Spermatangia superficial. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia small, cruciate or irregular, scattered in cortex.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
