Holotype species: Gordoniella yonakuniensis (Yamada & T.Tanaka) Itono

Original publication and holotype designation: Itono, H. (1977). Studies on the ceramiaceous algae (Rhodophyta) from southern parts of Japan. Bibliotheca Phycologica 35: 1-499, 72 figs.

Description: Thallus prostrate with erect axes, usually single, from each cell, simple or irregularly branched below, tapering upwards. Procarps on short lateral fertile branches. Carpogonial branch, 4-celled on one (supporting cell) of 3 pericentral cells borne on sub-apical cell of fertile branch. Auxiliary cells cut off from supporting cell and from second pericentral cell- both producing carposporophytes with groups of carposporangia. Spermatangial clusters terminal on short lateral branches. Tetrasporangia pedicillate on lower cells of erect axes, tetrahedrally divided. Vegetative features like Lomathamnion E. Gordon, differs in having 3 pericentral cells, 2 auxiliary cells and absence of involucre in each female system.
