Precise date of publication: July 1855

Description: The thallus consists of 2 distinct parts, a basal portion of loosely organized filaments and an upright portion. The upright filaments are very short ca. 0.1 mm. Branching irregular, alternate or opposite. Each cell contains a parietal cup-shaped chloroplast becoming lobed with age. Unilocular sporangia develop from cells of basal or upright filaments; one cell may support more than one sporangium. True phaeophycean hairs with a basal sheath occur.
