The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory de Saint-Vincent.

Type locality: Cresswell (Hendey 1964: 211). Lectotype: BM 1522 (Greville collection) (Sabbe, Vyverman & Muylaert 1999: 9 (table 1)). Notes: Creswell, Northumberland, UK (Sabbe et al. 1999).
