Schneider & Searles (1991: 410) note: “We have included the var. caribaea Taylor (1942: 127) within the description of the species proper. Examination of North Carolina material also shows a continuum of variation from the var. americana to var. caribaea . The varieties are therefore only separable in extreme forms, and should not be maintained. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
