The type species (holotype) of the genus Acetabularia is Acetabularia acetabulum (Linnaeus) P.C.Silva.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Parvocaulis parvulus (Solms-Laubach) S.Berger, U.Fettweiss, S.Gleissberg, L.B.Liddle, U.Richter, H.Sawitzky & G.C.Zuccarello
