Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion glaciale (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Foslie; 6.vi.1894; TRH; C6-3037, includes slides 97-99; designated by Woelkerling, 1993: 109 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 419) Notes: Isolectotypes: PC, Foslie no. 7, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (box collection, filed under Lithothamnion gracilescens); BM, algal box collection 695. Specimen sequenced corresponds to Foslie (1895: pl. 15, fig. 24) to which lectotyped is narrowed; DNA sequence data have confirmed the placement of the species in L. glaciale (Peña et al., 2021: 10).
