Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Plocamium is Plocamium vulgare J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Plocamium cirrhosum (Turner) M.J.Wynne

Type locality: Ad litus occidentale Novae Hollandias [Australia], unde specimina dedit Desfontaines. (Agardh 1822: 181). Holotype: Desfontaines; LD, Herb. Agardh 28056 (Womersley 1994: 381).

Adjective (Latin), ribbed, having one or more primary veins or ridges (Stearn 1973).
