Nomenclatural note
"This species [non W. verticillata Harvey 1863: xxviii, nom. illeg. = Shepleya verticillata Gordon, a species not occurring in the Mediterranean Sea] was described by Kützing (1847: 164) from the island of Hvar (Croatia) and later illustrated in his Tabulae Phycologicae (Kützing, 1862: 13, pl. 39/c-e). Already Hauck (1882: 53) and later also Ardissone (1883: 312) and De Toni (1897: 135) listed it among the synonyms of W. penicillata." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 445). - (05 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
