The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodomonas is Rhodomonas baltica Karsten.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hillea caerulea (J.Schiller) Butcher.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), blue, especially the deep blue of the Mediterranean sky at midday (Stearn 1973).
