The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Olifantiella muscatinei (Reimer & J.J.Lee) Van de Vijver, Ector & C.E.Wetzel.
