The type species (holotype) of the genus Phyllophora is Phyllophora rubens (Linnaeus) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Erythrodermis traillii (Holmes ex Batters) Guiry & Garbary

Named for George William Traill (1836-1897), Scottish phycologist and mineralogist.

Type locality: Berwick, Northumberland, England (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 226). Lectotype: E. Batters; 27 January 1887; BM 4th specimen from left on a card marked 'Cystocarps' (Newroth & Taylor 1971: 95, fig 2).
