Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Scourfieldia is Scourfieldia complanata G.S.West.

Description
Cells oblong cordiform, 6 x 3 µm, slightly laterally flattened, with an apical depression; two equal flagella of 13-15 µm length emerging from the apical depression; chloroplast single, parietal, green, with a parietal pyrenoid surrounded by a starch sheath; stigma and contractile vacuoles not observed; this organism is related to Scourfieldia cordiformis Takeda (Ettl, 1983) but differs by the presence of a parietal chloroplast with pyrenoid and its more oblong shape.

Habitat
Euryhaline lower brackish-water organism.
