The type species (holotype) of the genus Nephroselmis is Nephroselmis olivacea F.Stein.

Type locality: Palau Islands, Republic of Palau; (Nakayama & al. 2007: 682) Holotype: fig. 19: 2000; Coastal water; (Nakayama & al. 2007: 682) Notes: The strain MBIC 11158, used for the holotype figure, is deposited in the National Institute of Technology and Evolution as NBRC 103013.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells free-living, flattened, ovate, with asymmetrical ventral face, 4.5-7 microns long, 4-5-7 microns wide and 2.5-3.5 microns thick. Two unequal heterodynamic flagella, c. 10 microns and c. 20 microns long, inserted ventrally. The long flagellum extends posteriorly in the resting cell. A single chloroplast, green or yellowish green, parietal, dorsal, with narrow sinuses, a conspicuous pyrenoid with tubular thylakoids, and a large anterior eyespot. Body scales of five types; scales of innermost layer small, square; scales of second layer small, square, with high central boss; scales of third layer small, stellate; large spiny scales c.120nm in in height, unipolar, with 11 spines; large spiny scales c. 200nm in height, bipolar, with 16 spines. Flagella without third layer of scale. T-hair without proximal subunits. P1-hairs on the short falgellum. No pit and tip hairs
