Taxonomic note
"Sauvageau (1912) described the new
variety C. mediterranea v. valiantei on the basis
of some thalli collected near the surface together
other thalli of the autonym. Specimens of the
new variety show numerous primary branches
with a spinose swollen basal portion like
tophules. Specimens with similar structures
were previously collected and illustrated by
Valiante (1883: Plate 9, Fig. 2, as "anomalous
form of C. amentacea").
Verlaque et al. (1999: 82), having critically
examined the detailed descriptions made by
Sauvageau of his form and having examined the
specimens of type locality (Banyuls), concluded
that "tophules" were actually "galls", probably
induced by microorganisms. Therefore, this
taxon has no taxonomic value.
It, erroneously, was listed in the recent
checklist by Furnari et al. (2010)" (Cormaci et al. 2012: 351). - (26 August 2015) - M.D. Guiry
