The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chara canescens Loiseleur.

Participle (Latin), becoming white; applied to plants covered with greyish-white pubescence.

Invalid: full and direct citation of basionym not made: "These specimens from Svalbard differed from typical C. canescens. Nordstedt, in Strom (1921), named these specimens Chara aspera f. spitsbergensis.
