The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chara canescens Loiseleur.

Type locality: "Has. Common in stagnant fresh water at Cabul. So much incrusted, that at first sight it resembles Sphagnum." [Kabul, Afghanistan]; (Griffith 1849: 278) Notes: Type is listed in Schubert & al. (2024: 351) as "Holotype (Griffith 1849): pl. 63."
