The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Colaconema savianum (Meneghini) R.Nielsen.

Taxonomic note
"This species was described from the Adriatic Sea by Kützing (1843: 371). The name is illegitimate because later homonym of Ca. affine Harvey, described by Harvey (1833: 344) (see in this note at the above entry). Afterwards, Kützing (1849: 640) proposed Ca. pygmaeum as a nomen novum for that species giving later an illustration of it in his Tabulae Phycologicae (Kützing, 1861: 19, pl. 59/I)."
