Syntype localities: "Hab. ad saxa et corallia demersa in Adriatico ad Tergestum frequentior, in Mediterraneo ad Nicaeam rarius" (Trieste, Italy and Nice, France) (Agardh 1842: 91). Lectotype: LD 22089 (Athanasiadis 1988: 31). Notes: Lectotype locality selected by Athanasiadis (1988: 31, fig. 1, which includes syntypes) as Trieste, Italy.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1973).
