Taxonomic note
According to Babbini & Bressan (1997) and John et al. (2003) Phymatolithon tenuissimum (Foslie) Adey is a synonym of Lithothamnion tenuissimum Foslie (and not the other way around). In Lawson & John (1987) Phymatolithon tenuissimum (Foslie) Adey is cited as an accepted species with Lithothamnion tenuissimum Foslie as basionym. John et al. (2003) note that “according to Chamberlain (pers. comm.), this species might be more correctly attributed to the genus Mesophyllum since having a partly co-axial hypothallus and small tetrasporangial conceptacle chambers ( 70-90µm in diameter).”¨ - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
