General environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells solitary, spherical, 6.5-23.0 µm in diameter, without a wall but surrounded by a thick mucilaginous sheath. Single chloroplast grayish green, with many extending lobes and without a pyrenoid. Peripheral thylakoid absent. Plastoglobuli clusters present. Nucleus central. Golgi bodies always in the perinuclear region. Ring-shaped nucleus-associated organelles (NAOs) associated with electron-dense material. Asexual reproduction by fission. Sexual reproduction unknown. Mannitol present as a LMWC.

Type information
Type locality: Mangrove area at the estuary of the Shiira River, Iriomote Island, Okinawa, Japan (Kushibiki et al. 2012: 116). Holotype: 20 March 1984; TNS AL-56981 (Kushibiki et al. 2012: 116). Notes: Holotype: Resin-embedded Bulboplastis apyrenoidosa (TNS-AL-56981), deposited in TNS (Department of Botany, National Museum of Nature and Science).
