Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Chordaria is Chordaria flagelliformis (O.F.Müller) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lessonia spicata (Suhr) Santelices.

Type locality: Valparaiso, central Chile; (González et al. 2012: 1159) Lectotype (provisional): Fig. 41 (Suhr 1839)*: (González et al. 2012: 1160) Notes: * until the specimens in J. Agardh Herbarium are examined, confirmed as duplication of the type material of C. spicata and one of them selected as lectotype.

Adjective (Latin), bearing spikes.
