Taxonomic note
Wilks & Woelkerling (1995: 561) note that all plants in the holotype collection are sterile, and thus the status and disposition of the taxon are uncertain. Basso et al. (2011) re-describe Lithothamnion crispatum, based on the discovery of empty tetra/bisporangial conceptacles in the lectotype material as well as on additional material collected from the Mediterranean Sea. - (30 March 2011) - G.M. Distributional note
According to Wilks & Woelkerling (1995: 561), the southern Australian record is based on a single collection of Heydrich (1901b: 540) that Foslie (1901b) later described as Lithothamnion engelhartii f. pseudocrispata. - (27 March 2009) - G.M. Guiry
