The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitophyllum is Nitophyllum punctatum (Stackhouse) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cryptopleura violacea (J.Agardh) Kylin.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), violet, refers to the blue-red colours nearer blue (Stearn 1973).
