The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Palmaria mollis (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) van der Meer & C.J.Bird
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), lobed or divided in the manner of an outspread hand with the sinuses between the lobes pointing to the place of attachment (Stearn 1973).
