The type species (holotype) of the genus Spermothamnion is Spermothamnion turneri (Mertens ex Roth) Areschoug.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Tiffaniella phycophila (W.R.Taylor) E.M.Gordon.

Type locality: Black Beach Anchorage, I. Santa María, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador; (Taylor 1945: 263, 264) Type: W.R. Taylor no. 34-397; 30 January 1934; abundant on Galaxaura from surf-beaten rocks south of Black Beach Anchorage; Hancock Foundation; (Taylor 1945: 263, 264) Notes: Type: tetrasporic, spermatangial and cystocarpic (Taylor, 1945).
