Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Hapalospongidion is Hapalospongidion gelatinosum De A.Saunders.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herpodiscus durvilleae (Lindauer) G.R.South.

Nomenclatural note
The epithet was formed to reflect the species' occurrence on the kelp Durvillaea, which Lindauer spelled "Durvillea" and he used the spelling for the epithet "durvilleae" [genitive case]. The original spelling employed for Bory for the kelp genus was "Durvillaea", but there is no provision in the ICN for altering of Lindaeur's original orthography. - (21 December 2015) - M.D. Guiry
