Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Feldmannia irregularis (Kützing) G.Hamel

Adjective (Latin), dwarf (Stearn 1973).
