Type locality: "ad littus Hindostaniae" (India); (Silva & al. 1996: 299) Lectotype: Probably in LD; (Yamagishi & Masuda 1997: 141) Notes: According to Yamagishi & Masuda (1997: 141) the type locality of Hypnea flagelliformis J. Agardh is coast of Bangladesh, Bay of Bengal.
