The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neosiphonia savatieri (Hariot) M.S.Kim & I.K.Lee.
