Taxonomic note
Non Cochlodinium catenatum Okamura sensu Kofoid & Swezy (1921). F. Gómez in Gómez, Richlen & Anderson (2017: 41) indicates: "C. polykrikoides and C. catenatum are synonyms [i.e. Margalefidinium], with the latter having priority. The molecular phylogenies showed that the sequences of C. polykrikoides separate into several subclades (Iwataki et al., 2010; Reñé et al., 2013a). If the split of both species is maintained, the members of the clade dominant in Japan and Korea could be assigned to C. catenatum, while the subclade with the isolates from Puerto Rico and North America could be assigned to C. polykrikoides." - (27 April 2017) - M.D. Guiry
