Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon lamii (Me.Lemoine) Y.M.Chamberlain.

Type locality: France: Finistère: Brest (on porcelain); (INA 1996) Lectotype (Chamberlain, 1991: fig. 4) : dredged from Rade de Brest (on porcelain) (epitype) P.-L. & H.-M Crouan; January 1859 and February 1869; CO (Herb. Crouan); crust (fig. 4) on the largest of a number of porcelain fragments (Chamberlain 1991: 222, figs 4, 5 (photographs)) Notes: Lectotype: CO. As Lithothamnion melobesioides, coll. P.-L. & H.-M. Crouan, Dragué Rade de Brest, Janvier 1859 et Février 1869 (Chamberlain, 1991: 222, figs 4, 5 (photos)).

Nomenclatural note
Authority: Lemoine in Hamel & Lemoine 1953: 55 (Chamberlain 1991: 222; INA); P.& H. Crouan ex Lemoine in Hamel & Lemoine 1953: 55 (Irvine & Chamberlain 1994: 220). According to Chamberlain (1991: 222), the name L. [Lithothamnion] melobesioides was used as a herbarium name by the Crouan brothers but was never effectively published by them; Lemoine (in Hamel & Lemoine, 1953: 55) was therefore incorrect in assuming publication when she published the recombined epithet L. [Lithophyllum] melobesioides (Crouan) Lemoine; L. melobesioides Lemoine in Hamel & Lemoine (1953) must be treated as a new name. - (09 January 2013) - G.M. Guiry
