The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Syntype localities: "Rio, Mr Darwin, 595, 629. Algoa Bay, Herb. Bowerbank." [Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Algoa Bay, Cape Province, South Africa]; (Harvey 1849: 95) Notes: A syntype collected at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the voyage of HMS Beagle is in MEL (no. 594504, numbered 629 [as specified by Harvey] by C. Darwin), and is depicted in [A.S] Harvey et al. (2013) as figs 11-13. Collector: Darwin 595, 629 (INA). MEL-594504 (Darwin 629) and TCD (Darwin 595) collected early April 1832 at Botafogo Bay, Rio de Janeiro; Charles Darwin 3686, collected June 1836 at Cape of Good Hope; unnumbered specimen collected (date unknown) by C. Darwin at Algoa Bay, South Africa (Tâmega et al 2021: 288, 2890).
