The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptophytum laeve W.H.Adey.

Nomenclatural note
Basionym not cited (INA). According to Woelkering et al. (2005: 250), "originally described as Lithophyllum laeve (Strömfelt 1886: 21) (a later homonym of Lithophyllum laeve Kützing 1847: 33), but then (Foslie 1891a:44) reduced to the rank of form and treated as Lithophyllum lenormandii f. laeve, and then (Foslie 1898b: 7) re-elevated to the rank of species and transferred into Lithothamnion, as Lithothamnion laeve, where Foslie retained it in publication]." - (22 March 2012) - G.M.
